4th Congressional District Athletic Meet held in Siruma
“This congressional meet serves as a training ground for the student-athletes who will become nation builders in the next generation. An event like this provides opportunities to foster our relationships and a good way to develop cooperation and unity most especially,” shared Sandy SR. Ondis, Municipal Mayor of Siruma.

The Department of Education (DepEd) Siruma District in cooperation with the Local Government Unit of Siruma, hosted the 2018 4th Congressional District Athletic Meet on September 26-29, 2018. Over 4,000 participants from both elementary and secondary level with 10 delegations coming from Caramoan, Garchitorena, Goa, Lagonoy, Presentacion, Sagñay, San Jose, Siruma, Tigaon and Tinambac participated in the event.

Athletes competed under 22 different sports events, namely archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, billiard, boxing, chess, football, futsal, gymnastic, sepak takraw, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, wushu, and special events.

May Ann Delos Santos, gold medalist in Athletics from Goa district, shared, “Back then, my father discouraged me to play sports because I look petite but my mother saw my determination and pushed me to continue what I was doing. I started playing athletics when I joined a fun run in school and got the first place. Since then, I have been joining sports events and became a qualifier for the congressional meet.”

She added, “Being the gold medalist for this meet brought me so much happiness because all of my hard work paid off. To my co-athletes, I hope that they won’t stop playing sports and for the parents to continue being supportive in their child’s endeavor.”

Provincial Governor Miguel Luis Villafuerte also showed his full support and commitment to the congressional meet by giving P100,000. Aside from trophies, athletes will receive P1,000 cash for every gold medal, P500 for every silver medal, and P300 for every bronze medal.

Governor Villafuerte shared, “Just like our very own Michael Dasmariñas from Camsur Sports Academy who is now the World IBO Super Flyweight Champion in boxing and the Camsur Express ranked as #1 in the National Basketball League, let us continue to discover more talented athletes who are determined to gain triumphs in life.”

Moreover, to ensure the safety of all the guests and participants, the provincial government through the Environment, Disaster Management and Emergency Response Office (EDMERO) deployed its rescue and medical team all throughout the event. Other stakeholders include the Philippine National Police, Philippine Red Cross, Rural Health Unit, Kabalikat Civicom (Partido), Goa Rescue, Siruma Municipal Hospital, Bureau of Fire Goa, and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Offices of Tigaon, Garchitorena, Lagonoy, Tinambac, and Sagñay.

The congressional meet aims to select the best athletes who will represent the Partido sector in the upcoming Palarong Panlalawigan on November 12-16, 2018.
